May 1, 2019
Nature’s Ingredient Benefit (NIB) Spotlight this month is focused on White Willow Bark.
White Willow Bark
DESCRIPTION
Salix Alba, known as White Willow, is a deciduous tree native in Europe and western/central Asia, and commonly found throughout the United States. They average 30-50 feet in height. The undersides of white willow tree leaves are covered in fine, silky white hairs, thus the name “white willow”. The bark of white willow contains salicin, a compound similar to Aspirin. White willow bark has long been used in native and folk medicine to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever. The herbal benefits are often mentioned in texts from ancient Egypt.
TOPICAL BENEFITS
White willow bark is known for being a powerful analgesic for relieving pain and also benefits as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal. Additionally, it has antiseptic properties and is rich in antioxidants. The benefits of White willow bark can be experienced either topically or internally by being consumed.
Consumable? Yes, in the form of a tea by steeping chopped bark, but not the powdered form. You can also take capsules of willow bark. I recommend you consult a trained herbalist, alternative medicine practitioner or your physician for white willow bark supplements or powder.
